Good for you for doing your part to bring this neglected master to a wider audience. Online poet, novelist, and critic Dan Schneider has done his best to bring Emanuel attention, including trying to get the University of Nebraska Press to republish his poems and memoir, but to no avail. This article is simply extraordinary! I’ve heard James Emanuel speak and seen him talk about his life on video, but I’ve never gotten such a broad and sensitive vision of him before now.

Gary, thank you for sharing this interview with James Emanuel. Like Jake Lamar, I met James shortly after my arrival in Paris in the early 90s. I remember how gracious he was, inviting me into his apartment, speaking of his son, and of his work. I own several of his books of poetry and treasure them immensely. The poem above has added levity and beauty to my day.
