The Gardens of Versailles in Winter

I’ve been to the palace and gardens of Versailles dozens of times but never on such a quiet, empty afternoon as this.

It was a Monday, the day the palace is closed to the public, so relatively few people visit the gardens that day, even though they remain open. Even fewer visit on a cold misty Monday in February.

The alleys were empty. The fountains were silent. There trees were reflected in the still algal water in the basins.
